Who we are

Who we are

Since its creation in 1929, our Group has developed expertise in the production of sugar from sugar plants and the refining of imported raw sugar. Today, we are the country’s longest-standing sugar producer, with sugar mills in five regions of the Kingdom and a raw sugar refinery in Casablanca. Our commitment is to guarantee a steady supply of sugar for the country. Thanks to our aggregator model and our collaboration with leading research institutes, we are constantly improving product quality and crop yields, with a view to increasing domestic sugar production from sugar plants. To ensure a steady supply to the Moroccan market, we also import raw sugar, which we process at our Casablanca refinery. With our integrated model for extracting, refining, packaging and marketing sugar, we are positioned as one of the major integrated players in the agri-food sector in Africa.

History

The “Compagnie sucrière marocaine” (Moroccan Sugar Company) is created, COSUMA. The company is founded by a consortium of refiners. The first raw sugar refinery is built in the Roches Noires industrial district, near the port of Casablanca. It began operations in 1931, producing sugar loaves – 100 tonnes a day, packed in jute sacks bearing the image of a panther.

COSUMA comes under the control of the Saint Louis refineries. A major industrial and technical program is implemented to modernize the production facilities. COSUMA realized very satisfactory results.

COSUMA's success is accompanied by expansion work at the Casablanca site. In response to strong consumer demand, COSUMA launches granulated sugar production. A new tower dedicated to the granulated sugar process is built on the site. The company grows and expands its production capacity. Sugar loaf production rises from 30,000 tons a year in 1933 to 115,000 tons in 1948.

A new plant specializing in the manufacture of "cast" sugar loaves is built on the site of the Casablanca refinery. Sugar loaves are now made using two production processes: the "turbined" loaf plant uses centrifugation, while the "cast" loaf plant uses natural drainage.

A strategic change takes place in COSUMA's shareholding: the state acquires a 50% stake in the company, which is now called COSUMAR, Compagnie Sucrière Marocaine et de Raffinage (Moroccan Sugar and Refining Company). Faced with the need to develop the sector, the government launched the "sugar plan", a vast program to develop the sugar industry, mobilizing massive investment in irrigation infrastructure and processing units.

COSUMAR invented the shape of the sugar ingot, which gradually replaced the sugar loaf in urban consumer habits and became a flagship product. Its original, practical shape is ideal for quick tea preparation. It's easy to measure out and convenient to store. The ingot (molded product) is a Moroccan speciality, with a format and taste designed for tea preparation. They are sold in 1 kilo tins and in bundles (crates of 5 x 1 kilo).

COSUMAR becomes a subsidiary of ONA (North African Omnium), Morocco's leading private group, which takes control of the company's capital, now listed on the Casablanca stock exchange.

COSUMAR expands and acquires by merger the two sugar factories in Doukkala/Zemamra and Sidi Bennour, built to process sugar beet grown on irrigated soils in the Doukkala region.

A Strategic Plan 2001-2003, initiated by COSUMAR, is implemented to modernize its industrial facilities. A series of innovations and numerous investments were made at the Casablanca refinery, and at the Sidi Bennour and Zemamra sugar mills. The aim: quality products, higher yields and greater productivity.

The COSUMAR group became Morocco's sole sugar operator by acquiring four state-owned sugar companies: SUTA, SUCRAFOR, SURAC and SUNABEL. With COSUMAR SA, which groups together the Casablanca refinery and the Doukkala sugar refineries, the group comprises five companies.

The COSUMAR Group is recognized by the FAO, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, as a model aggregator for the sugar industry. Barid Al Maghrib publishes a postage stamp dedicated to the Moroccan sugar industry, celebrating the 80th year of the sugar industry in Morocco. Valued at 3.35 dirhams, 200,000 copies of the stamp were issued.

All production sites achieve ISO 14001 certification. COSUMAR SA and SURAC receive the CGEM social responsibility label. The COSUMAR Group takes over the presidency of the International Sugar Organization (ISO) on behalf of Morocco.

The launch of the first African unit in Guinea Conakry confirms COSUMAR's ambition to strengthen its commercial presence in West Africa. The new plant will package and market white sugar. The COSUMAR Group has acquired a 55% stake in COMAGUIS (morocco-guinean sugar company). The production unit will be located near the port of Conakry. Its planned capacity is 50,000 tons of granulated lump sugar.

COSUMAR celebrates its 90th anniversary! Sugar has become the symbol of a successful import substitution policy pursued by the Moroccan government for 40 years. COSUMAR looks to the future with the digital transformation of its businesses. The "Ataissir" system has been set up to digitalize the group's activities. COSUMAR equips its farmers with smart cards to track their operations in real time and ensure traceability throughout the sugar chain.

Sugar industry

By investing more than 10 billion dirhams in the sugar sector over the last few years, we have been able to make significant improvements in innovation and R&D, as well as invest in clean technologies to improve our performance metrics for a sustainable industry. Our Group has been a pioneer in the agro-industrial area, negotiating aggregation agreements with its farming partners. This win-win connection between aggregator and aggregated allows us to optimize production in terms of quality and quantity at the upstream agricultural level while also improving the lives of over 80,000 partner farmers and their families. Thanks to our collaboration with renowned research institutes and farmer partners, we are constantly increasing product quality and crop yields to improve national sugar production from sugar plants.
